Fishing Report August 11, 2017

The season continues along here at Walters Cove with the same message……..great fishing and nice weather!  I struggle to make each fishing report sound different because, well, they aren’t!  I am still astounded by the consistency of the fishing grounds here in Kyuquot!

Limits of chinook are the norm as over 97% of our guests tub out on chinook!  Add in a nice mix of halibut, lingcod, and rockfish and our guests all will be enjoying BBQs and fish frys all winter long!

While the bigger halibut seem to be harder to find than usual this year, those with the persistence and patience to work the inner waters have been rewarded more times than not.  Congratulations to Harold and Karl who toughed it out, showing the necessary patience and were rewarded with a nice set of 46 and 55 lb halibut on Saturday!  Travelling out to the 50 edge has consistently produced chicken halibut, getting everyone their “unders” along with assorted other bottom fish and plenty of salmon.

Hotspots for salmon continue to be Lookout and Thornton Islands.  It’s great that these areas are open all season now due to the DNA testing that has been going on here for the past few years and continues to happen.  Our guests are loving that they can stay inside the old “one mile off the Surfline” restriction and retain chinooks and wild coho!  We had a burst of coho early in the season but they have taken their time in coming through in any numbers.  We are starting to see more and more and the odd “northern” is starting to show up so it looks promising for the weeks coming up.

The weather has been typical of Kyuquot with lots of sun and very little rain.  We are starting to see some fog in the morning, typical of “Fogust” but that usually means calm seas till the sun burns it off and the afternoon winds pick up.  I could count the number of rainy days this season on the fingers of one hand!

Our guests have enjoyed some great wildlife viewing with the orcas putting on some impressive shows and the sightings of many marine creatures including a raft of over a hundred sea otters, sunfish, sea lions, humpback whales and the list goes on!

I’ve been tracking the warm water out in the Pacific to see if there is any upcoming opportunities for tuna fishing and the good news is the water seems to have crept far enough north now but we still need it to push in closer to shore.  Right now it looks like it’s a good 100 or so miles off shore so we’ll keep you posted should it push into the canyons just off Kyuquot that will give us access to some nice albacore fishing!

The season has been great so far and we are almost sold out for the remainder of the year.  I have one boat available from Aug 13 – 17 and that’s the only opening for the rest of the season so if you’re thinking about it, better jump on it or we will have to wait until 2018!
