With a staff to guest ratio of almost 1:1, the service provided at Walters Cove Resort is exceptional. Our professional staff are trained to anticipate and deliver your needs and exceed your expectations. They understand that the Resort’s success is dependent on repeat business and repeat business only comes from happy guests.
All our guides have extensive knowledge and experience fishing in the waters of Kyuquot Sound, and most live locally. Knowing when and where to go, how weather patterns and tides affect fish location and feeding habits and being able to provide a safe, fun, productive fishing trip is what they live for! All our guides have had the necessary training and are fully certified to provide you with the fishing experience you want and expect!
The Food
We know that while fishing is the main reason you come to see us, the whole experience of your stay is equally important and a large component of that is the quality of the food. A full breakfast buffet, homemade soups, comfort food lunches at the lodge, packed lunches for the boat, freshly baked snacks, fresh fruit and munchies all are offered to keep you going throughout the day. After working up an appetite during a day’s fishing, come back to the lodge and enjoy a selection of appetizers while winding down and relaxing before a delicious 3 course gourmet dinner. Prepared with the finest ingredients, our signature dishes offer combinations of local seafood, hearty meats and fresh vegetables prepared in a variety of styles to suit anyone’s tastes. One evening during your stay, experience some of the local culture by savoring a butterflied salmon traditionally cooked with cedar over an open fire. It’s something you will never forget!
The Fishing
One of the only remaining, relatively untapped, accessible saltwater fishing meccas along the west coast of North America, Kyuquot is world famous for its productive salmon, halibut and bottom fishing. A newly discovered opportunity is also developing for albacore tuna!
Hundreds of runs of Chinook (King) and Coho (Silver) salmon follow the “Salmon Highway” down the west side of British Columbia coast along the 50-fathom line. What makes Kyuquot so special along this highway is that there is a huge feeding flat located between the highway and the entrance to Kyuquot Sound. To make this even better, located on the southern end of the flat is a giant reef that extends for over a mile to hold the fish there before continuing their journey south to their river of origin, some as far away as California!
Right next to a Rockfish Conservation Area, which serves as a protected, breeding ground for rockfish and ling cod, this large feeding flat provides the perfect habitat for bottomfish and halibut in addition to salmon.
Canyons extending inwards from the continental shelf provide a steady upwelling of the deep, nutrient rich, waters of the Pacific Ocean making the area perfect for collecting huge masses of the chain of life in the sea, namely, plankton, baitfish (herring, anchovies, sand lance) and predator species (salmon, halibut, tuna, lingcod, etc). This spreads out over that huge feeding flat which results in one of the most, if not THE most consistent saltwater fishery on the West Coast.
It’s the perfect combination of conditions and structure that results in Kyuquot Sound’s legendary reputation!
The Equipment
Walters Cove is proud to provide only the best equipment available. Our fleet of 7 large, comfortable, 23’ Grady White Gulfstream 232 boats are all equipped with well-maintained 300 HP Suzuki 4 stroke motors and sport a 20 HP Suzuki kicker to provide an exhaust free, reliable fishing excursion. The boats all have an on-board, flush toilet head and are equipped with high power electric downriggers, fishing rods made for the species of fish you are fishing for, high end Abel and Avet reels spooled with high quality fishing line and current, dependable electronics.
We even provide high quality, clean, Helly Hanson Armour raingear for those days when Mother Nature is in a bit of a mood. Your comfort is as important to us as it is to you!
Your Fish
The fish that you caught and brought home is how you will remember your trip throughout the winter. We recognize that your prized catch is something you share with friends and family. After being weighed, recorded and photos taken, your fish are cleaned and filleted as soon as they come to the dock! You have choices of how they are cleaned including cutting each fillet into meal sized portions as small as one pound. We have a Provincial Processing License which permits us to prepare sport caught fish in pieces smaller than standard DFO regulations allow. All your fish portions are individually vac packed, labelled and then put into our dedicated fish freezer within minutes to get you the freshest product possible! Unlike most other lodges, this service is all included in our package pricing!
